having a play

had a mess round with photoshop brushes and lightings, wanted a bleached out white effect, will probably apply this technique to the comic as i'm very very happy with it :)

Some more competition entries!

The first is for Tiger Prints female relationship card competition. I wanted to make this one a bit more mainstream. It's marketed towards an older couple, I think older men are more inclined to buy a comedy card than a pink frilly romantic one, so I chose a more neautral pallet but still made it romancy, i've also found that older women tend to be more self concious about their age so I thought a card helping with their esteem on the issue was called for.

My second image is for save the frogs art competition I found earlier today. It's an issue I actually care about and it also links in with my want to help with causes so i've had a lot fo fun doing it. I wanted the frog to be vibrant and beautiful against a desolate impeding background,to help with awareness and push the necessity for action. The competition ends tomorrow so anyone should enter: save the frogs!

Page 1

so, here's the first page of my comic. I'm looking into creating my own website to post this on regularily but for now i'll post the first few pages. My aim is to get the first chapter finished this term, with at leats one page a week. I want it to be a blunt first chapter.

I will change the etxt to a more readable format at a later date.

some updates....

As promised here is some more artwork for my comic:

I prefer the softer colours if my other two pictures but like the starkness and the vulnerability of this image, it also feels very cold which is the point.

see i'm so happy with these two images and wany my comic to have this simplicity throughout, which will be a challenge I think, ah well time to get better!

Today I sent a few emails round to people I really admire artwise, so far only the amazing Doug TenNapel replied with so much more help than I expected! (I knew there was a reason to love this guy besides his awesome artwork and him having a cat called Waffle)
I sent an couple of emails to webcomic artists I admire but I seriously doubt i'll get a reply from them, but time will tell :)

In otehrnews I have decided I want to target slutwalks as the second half of my project, I think the right to choose what we wear and when we wear it without the fear of being raped is a hugely important issue for women today. I'm sick of the blame being placed on the the victim rather than the rapist. I also want to look at domestic abuse, as it is a subject that has happened clsoe to home and I can relate fully to. Tomorrow's aim it to message a few women's sexual health centres as well as crisis shelters, get some research as well as asking about how willing they would be for me to create some posters.

posters like these probably wouldn't make me any more likely to report abuse, one of the main aspects of abuse is that you are made to feel like it isn't abuse and it's you're own fault, these posters rely too much on the victim's realization that thety are a victim, my posters aim to empower and spark the action to seek help.

quick bit of character design...

this is the sort of character shape I want rather than 6ft and too much boob :) stocky, chubby muscular girls for the win! Yeah Hel is punk :)

some quick updates...

I was asked to commission a Batman picture using this as reference:

I didn't really like the blimps so my version removed these and I added more colour. I'm aware this isn't completely my own work but it's my take on the picture. I'm not used to drawing city scapes so I was glad to get out of my comfort zone.

i'm pretty happy with it actually, I like the colours a lot.

I also entered this card design into the tigerprint special female relationship competition:

I tried to make mine as colourful as possible. I hate the muted cards you see in card shops all with repetitions of the same animal, so I tried to make mine eyecatching and with an unusual animal.  teh brief said not to make teh colour scheme all pink so I went for green, my own personal favourite colour. Other people on the page have gone for the next best stereotypely girly colours like lilac which I think, does sell well but it doesn't really stand out. My own card definately looks less professional (I need to work harder st typography) but i'm happy with teh uniqueness of my imagery, and I hope it will catch some eyes. The animals are fruit bats by the way, a really caring motherly animal with a face akin to a puppie's :)

I will be updating in a couple fo days with more from my Hel commic, here is a quick taster of my second page i'm working on.
